Jheronimus Bosch was the forerunner of surrealism, famous for his fantastic images in a hostile world full of mysticism from the middle ages.
The postman-like freak is perhaps delivering a letter to the conspiring figures in the hole under the bridge. The funnel on this curious bird's head gives him a preposterous appearance. The inscription on the note in the beak of this monster could throw light on the contemplated symbolism. However, the text is difficult to read so is open to interpretations.
